Application Overview

How to select INA bearings for Machine Assemblies & Cam Systems

Industrial machine assemblies use bearings in cam mechanisms, guide tracks, shafts, gear stages, pumps, fans and supported housings. Each position may see different radial and axial loads, shock, shaft misalignment or heat, so one assembly often needs several bearing types. Buyers and maintenance teams care most about receiving every specified part for the assembly, including rings, washers, sleeves and housings.

  • Check the cam or track contact conditions and specify the outer ring profile for each roller, since it affects how the load is carried along the running surface.
  • Check whether the design calls for an inner ring, thrust washer or adapter sleeve, and list these parts on the same requirement sheet as the bearing.
  • Use spherical roller or self-aligning bearings where shaft deflection or mounting misalignment is expected, and thrust or tapered roller bearings where axial load is significant.
  • For hot, heavily loaded or vibrating positions such as screens and mill stands, confirm the internal clearance and heat resistance against the actual operating conditions.

Component Check

Three roles check three things before an order

A correct bearing order in this application rests on installation geometry, an accurately identified part and a complete component list. Each role owns one of these checks.

Design Engineer

  • Installation space around the bearing position
  • Mating surfaces on the shaft and housing
  • Component geometry against the assembly drawing

Maintenance Supervisor

  • The failed cam follower or compact bearing assembly
  • Original reference and markings on the removed part
  • Roller diameter, stud thread and outer ring profile

Parts Buyer

  • Inner rings included where the design requires them
  • Washers matched to each axial or thrust arrangement
  • Other specified parts listed on the same requirement

Adding mating components to one requirement keeps the arrangement complete. Machined-ring bearings may need a separately specified inner ring, and axial needle roller bearings need the matching washer reference.
